Dream of Mohiuddin Ibn Arabi (rahmatullahi alaihe)

Hazrat Sheikh Mohiuddin Ibn Arabi (rahmatullahi alaihe) narrates that he developed enmity with a particular individual for the only reason that the individual used to speak ill of Hazrat Sheikh Abu Madyan (rahmatullahi alaihe).

One night, Hazrat Sheikh Mohiuddin Ibn Arabi (rahmatullahi alaihe) was blessed with the vision of the Beloved Prophet (sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) in a dream. In the dream, the Beloved Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) asked: “Mohiuddin! Why do you maintain enmity with that individual?” At this, Mohiuddin Ibn Arabi (rahmatullahi alaihe) replied: “Oh Rasool Allah (sallallahu alaihe wa sallam)! He speaks ill of a person called Abu Madyan. I am fond of Abu Madyan.”

The Beloved Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) stated: “Does not the individual maintain love for Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala and his Messenger (sallallahu alaihe wa sallam)?” Mohiuddin Ibn Arabi (rahmatullahi alaihe) stated: “Yes, he does.” The Beloved Prophet (sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) further stated: “Since he maintains enmity with Abu Madyan, you also maintain enmity with him. You maintain enmity with him and do not love him even though he maintains love for Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala and his Messenger (sallallahu alaihe wa sallam).”

In the morning, Mohiuddin Ibn Arabi (rahmatullahi alaihe) repented from all ill will towards the individual. Mohiuddin Ibn Arabi (rahmatullahi alaihe) went to the residence of the individual and asked for his forgiveness. He gave the individual an expensive shawl as gift.

When the individual became pleased, Mohiuddin Ibn Arabi (rahmatullahi alaihe) asked: “Why do you maintain enmity with Abu Madyan?” His response showed that there was no real foundation for his enmity with Abu Madyan. Mohiuddin Ibn Arabi (rahmatullahi alaihe) dispelled all misconceptions that the individual held about Abu Madyan. Afterwards, the individual repented from speaking ill of Abu Madyan.

The individual subsequently became fond of Sheikh Abu Madyan because of the barakah or blessings of the Beloved Prophet (sallallahu alaihe wa sallam).
